This imposing stone speaks volumes doesn’t it? We stand before the Samjeondo Monument a stele etched with a history both glorious and humiliating.

The Samjeondo Monument is more than just a stone. It marks a pivotal moment in Korean history. The Joseon dynasty’s submission to the Qing dynasty in 1636. This event is forever imprinted on this very stone. The original name Daecheong Hwangje Gongdeok Bi translates to the stele to the merits and virtues of the Emperor of the Great Qing. A testament to a forced alliance.

Following the siege of Namhansanseong King Injo was compelled to surrender. He accepted tributary status to the Qing. The following year the Qing emperor ordered a monument. This monument would honor the Qing emperor’s virtues. In 1639 it was erected at Samjeondo. This site was near the Sambatnaru a major crossing point of the Han River.

The Samjeondo Monument’s location has shifted numerous times. It’s a reflection of Korea’s fluctuating relationship with its powerful neighbor. The monument was buried and resurrected several times. This depended on the political climate. For example in 1895 the monument was buried after the Treaty of Shimonoseki. In 1913 it was mysteriously unearthed and erected again. Later during Syngman Rhee’s presidency there were even orders to destroy it. The Ministry of Culture intervened. They had it buried for safekeeping. Finally in 1963 river floods revealed its presence. It was then moved to a park in 1983.

Its inscriptions written in Manchu Mongolian and Hanmun detail the events leading to the surrender. They narrate the king’s submission. They highlight the Qing emperor’s perceived mercy. The inscription is biased. It presents a one-sided account of this pivotal relationship. It depicts King Injo attaching himself to the Qing emperor’s virtue.

The monument’s journey reflects Korea’s complex history. Its story is one of defiance and acceptance. It’s a stark reminder of a difficult past. Its survival is a testament to its historical significance. The Samjeondo Monument isn’t just a monument to a past surrender. It stands as a silent witness to Korean resilience. It is a vital part of Korea’s identity. It is a reminder of their struggle for independence.

Today the Samjeondo Monument stands as a historical site. It is the 101st historic site of South Korea. It reminds us of the complexities of history. It serves as a lesson for future generations. It is a symbol of a nation’s journey. A journey toward self-determination.
