Clutching a small, worn prayer book, a young woman whispered, “Nonna always said this place held a special kind of peace.” The Santuario Cuore Immacolato di Maria, nestled in Valdragone, San Marino, does indeed exude a palpable tranquility. This sanctuary, dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a testament to the deep Catholic roots of San Marino and a beacon of spiritual solace for all who visit. The sanctuary’s story begins in the mid-20th century with Father Bonaventura Blattman of Munich, Germany. His vision led to the founding of the Pious Union of the Guard of Honor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1932. This movement found its way to San Marino in the late 1950s thanks to the efforts of Father Leonardo Tasselli. He recognized the need for a dedicated Marian center, a place for spiritual exercises, retreats, and pilgrimages. The search for the perfect location led to Valdragone. The first stone of the Santuario Cuore Immacolato di Maria was laid in 1965, blessed by Pope Paul VI himself. The circular sanctuary, with its five protruding wings and tiered structure, is a unique architectural marvel. Atop the sanctuary stands a statue of the Immaculate Mary. Additional statues of saints adorn the roofs of the wings and the second tier. The sanctuary is part of a larger complex, including the House for Spiritual Exercises (Casa di Spiritualitá San Giuseppe) and the Monastery of the Clarisse, all set within a peaceful park. Blessed Gabriele Allegra, who translated the entire Bible into Chinese, further cemented the sanctuary’s importance. He described it as “a new house of Nazareth,” highlighting its role as a center of Marian devotion.
