Could a church be a city? Here at the Santuario della Beata Vergine della Consolazione, the lines blur. This sanctuary isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a community hub, a space designed for connection, nestled right here in Borgo Maggiore, San Marino. The Santuario della Beata Vergine della Consolazione, also known as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Consolation, isn’t your typical church. It’s a fascinating blend of brutalist and neorealist architecture, designed by the renowned Italian architect Giovanni Michelucci. Construction began in February 1964, and the sanctuary was consecrated on June 11, 1967. Originally, a local engineer, Gino Zani, was tasked with the design. He proposed something traditional. However, fate intervened. Michelucci, who had been consulted by the San Marino government on a separate project, ultimately took the reins. His vision for the Santuario della Beata Vergine della Consolazione was far from ordinary. The sanctuary’s trapezoidal layout is a journey of discovery. Paths wind around the main hall, which sits four meters below street level. Entering through the narthex, you’re presented with two options. One path leads directly to the women’s gallery above. The other descends via a covered staircase, guiding you to the lower level and the main hall. Above, the copper roof, replacing the original lead one, forms two slopes resting on parabolic arches. These arches speak to Michelucci’s architectural philosophy, also seen in his famed Church of the Autostrada del Sole. The Santuario della Beata Vergine della Consolazione is meant to be part of the landscape, open to the world around it. It’s a mini-city within a city, encouraging both internal reflection and external dialogue. This concept of community is at the heart of Michelucci’s design. Over the years, the roof has presented a persistent challenge. Water infiltration, a recurring issue since the early days, necessitated a complete replacement of the lead with copper between 2012 and 2013. Despite the change, the new roof adheres to the original design, thanks to meticulous archival records. In 2016, to mark the 50th anniversary of the sanctuary’s consecration, Pope Francis declared a Jubilee Year in honor of Our Lady of Consolation. The year began with Bishop Andrea Turazzi blessing a new bell. Cardinal Edoardo Menichelli visited in June 2017, presiding over the Eucharist and a procession. The Jubilee Year concluded in November 2017 with a visit from Bishop Turazzi. The Santuario della Beata Vergine della Consolazione is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a testament to community, a place where architecture and spirituality intertwine, inviting you to connect with something larger than yourself.
