Gazing up, can you believe that the Hallidie Building stands as a testament to architectural innovation? It is located at 130 Sutter Street. This iconic office building resides in San Francisco’s Financial District. It stands proudly between Montgomery and Kearny Streets.
The Hallidie Building is named in honor of Andrew Smith Hallidie. Hallidie was a San Francisco cable car pioneer. Architect Willis Polk designed it and the building opened in 1918.
Did you know some consider it the first American building with glass curtain walls? However, the Boley Clothing Company building in Kansas City predates it.
UC Berkeley commissioned the Hallidie Building. They anticipated a neo-classical design. They were familiar with Polk’s other Financial District buildings. Instead, they got the Bay Area’s first glass curtain wall building. Its details drew from Gothic street lamps and surrounding historic buildings. Berkeley was not pleased with the outcome. They never used the building. The color scheme embarrassed them. It was chosen to highlight the school colors.
The Hallidie Building’s balconies and fire escapes are recognizable. They might seem excessive for a building of its size. Polk used the fire escapes as a design element. He even added an extra one for symmetry.
In 2010, these elements were deemed unsafe. A two-year restoration began. It finished in 2013. The restoration restored safety without altering the original exterior. The original colors were brought back to life.
Henry Russell Hitchcock called the Hallidie Building the first true example of a curtain wall applied to a large urban structure. Its street front is an almost continuous glass surface. It hangs on cantilevered spandrels. The ironwork balconies and cornices display a Venetian Gothic style. Polk cleverly treated the fire escapes as part of the artistic design.
The Hallidie Building faced demolition threats. Fortunately, it was designated a historic monument in 1971. Renovations occurred in the 1980s and from 2011 to 2013.
Page & Turnbull developed a strategy to repair deteriorated sheet metal. This was on the Sutter Street façade. The facade features the first high-rise glass curtain wall in the United States.
Several components of the south elevation deteriorated. This was mainly due to corrosion of steel elements. These elements make up the curtain-wall frame, fire escape, and balcony support. Galvanized steel sheet metal components also corroded.
The San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects opened its Center for Architecture + Design in the street-level retail space in 2023. The Hallidie Building also houses the headquarters of Fandom.
So, next time you pass by, remember the Hallidie Building. It is not just a building. It is a piece of San Francisco’s architectural history. Its innovative design and storied past make it a true landmark.
