Fleet Science Center. What started as a dream in 1957 became a reality in 1973. The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center stands before you. It’s more than just a science museum. It’s a place where curiosity takes flight. It’s an icon in Balboa Park.
Back in the 1950s, some San Diegans wanted their own science museum. They formed the San Diego Space and Science Foundation. Their biggest wish was a planetarium. After years of planning and raising money, construction began in the 1970s.
In 1973, the Reuben H. Fleet Space Theater and Science Center opened. It was named after Reuben H. Fleet. He was an aviation pioneer who founded the U.S. Air Mail service. His San Diego-based company, Consolidated Aircraft, built famous World War II aircraft. The Fleet family’s gift helped make the science center possible.
The Fleet Science Center was special from the start. It combined interactive exhibits with a planetarium and an IMAX Dome theater. This set a new standard for science museums.
Step inside the Fleet Science Center. You will find more than 100 interactive exhibits. These exhibits are spread across eight galleries. There are also major traveling exhibitions.
Kids will love Kid City. It is an interactive play space for children five and under. The Pulseworks VR Transporter offers a virtual reality adventure. San Diego’s Water exhibit teaches about water processing. So Watt! explains how electricity is produced and energy is conserved.

The Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Giant Dome Theater is a highlight. This IMAX theater has a 76-foot screen. It shows nature films, movies, and educational programs.

The Fleet Science Center is always changing. It expanded in 1998 to include new rides and exhibits. In 2001, the original star projector was replaced with a Digistar II. The theater was renovated in 2012 and now features a NanoSeam Dome screen.
