“Why is that building white?” someone always asks when they first see the North Chapel here at Liberty Station. It certainly stands out. I am about to tell you the story of this unique and historical place.
The North Chapel was completed in 1942. It is the only white building at the former Naval Training Center. The NTC was also known as boot camp. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Back then the North Chapel was the religious center of the Naval Training Center. It hosted various religious services for recruits. Priests rabbis and ministers all served here. They served sailors of many faiths. If you look closely at the stained glass windows you can see symbols of the different training schools at the Naval Training Center.
Fun fact actor Henry Fonda was the model for one of the windows. He is the fourth window on the left. It is a tribute to USN sailors. The North Chapel held a special place in the hearts of many. Before deployment sailors would visit for religious services. They also reserved it for weddings and memorials.
But in 2018 the North Chapel faced closure. A local company 828 Venue Management stepped in. They leased the chapel and proposed a renovation. The community initially opposed the changes. After much discussion a plan was approved that met preservation standards.
Today the North Chapel is a beautifully renovated event space. It still retains its historic charm. It features high ceilings and original wood floors. The main sanctuary can seat about 200 people. There are smaller rooms behind the altar perfect for getting ready.
The North Chapel is now a popular venue for weddings and other celebrations. Its location within Liberty Station is ideal. Guests can easily walk to nearby hotels restaurants and shops. You can even keep your entire wedding weekend right here.
