Did the ground tremble here at the Memorial to the Battle of Ezra Church? On July 28, 1864, the earth surely shook with the fury of battle. This memorial marks a pivotal moment in the Atlanta Campaign during the Civil War. Union General Sherman aimed to sever the last railroad supplying Confederate General Hood’s troops in Atlanta. He dispatched troops under General Howard to target the Macon & Western Railroad. Hood countered, sending divisions led by Generals Lee and Stewart. Lee was meant to block the Union advance, while Stewart was to flank them. However, Lee attacked prematurely near Ezra Church, before Stewart’s arrival. The ensuing battle was a devastating Union victory. The Confederates suffered 3,000 to 5,000 casualties, compared to just 600 Union losses. This lopsided victory at the Battle of Ezra Church is considered one of the most unbalanced of the entire war. It significantly demoralized the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Within ten days of taking command, General Hood had lost a third of his infantry. The Memorial to the Battle of Ezra Church stands as a testament to this brutal but significant clash, a somber reminder of the cost of war.
