“A retreat from the stresses of modern life.” That’s what E. N. Requa envisioned for this land, now marked by the Scenic Loop Playground Plaque. Businessman E.N. Requa developed Scenic Loop Playground on 320 acres north of San Antonio. It was meant as a rural recreational resort not far from the city.

Requa sought to create a haven. Middle-class workers could find recreational opportunities in a natural setting. This area sat at the meeting point of Lee and Helotes Creeks.

Imagine small lakes acting as swimming pools. Picture a larger lake perfect for boating and fishing. See live oak trees draped with Spanish moss in Grey Forest.

Requa allocated land for various activities. There were bridle trails, athletic fields, tennis courts, and pocket parks. Scenic Loop Road bisected the development into two units.

Unit No. 1 opened to the public in 1929. It featured small lots intended for campsites. Unit No. 2 followed a year later. This section offered larger lots. People could board horses and other livestock there. Many structures used native materials in their construction.

However, the Stock Market Crash of 1929 changed everything. The ensuing depression slowed Scenic Loop Playground’s progress. Its character gradually shifted from recreational to residential.

By 1934, Requa transferred common property to the Scenic Loop Playground Club. The club was to manage the area for the residents’ benefit. Lodges and lots continued to be sold into the 1940s. The recreational area slowly transformed into a rural community.

Finally, in 1962, Scenic Loop Playground officially became the City of Grey Forest. This plaque commemorates that transformation. It stands as a reminder of Requa’s original vision. It also marks the evolution of a community shaped by both dreams and economic realities. The Scenic Loop Playground Plaque serves as a portal to the past. It tells a story of recreation. It also tells a story of resilience and community.
