How does a school cultivate courageous leaders? Atlanta International School does just that. It shapes students to improve the world. Founded in 1984, the school opened in 1985. It began in a rented schoolhouse. Sardis United Methodist Church provided the space. The school started with 51 students. These children were in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade.
In 1987, Atlanta International School moved. Its new location was on Long Island Drive. The school acquired the facilities from the Fulton County Board of Education. Enrollment grew quickly. By September 1987, 193 students attended. They were in kindergarten through eighth grade. High school grades followed later. The first graduates received diplomas in 1992. By 2008, enrollment exceeded 900 students.
Atlanta International School moved again in 1995. This move was under an agreement with the Atlanta Board of Education. The school’s current site was once North Fulton High School. Architect Philip Shutze designed the building. Renovations preserved the building’s historical integrity.
The campus features many resources. Science labs, a large library, and computer facilities are available. There is also an auditorium and the Lademacher Performing Arts Center. Fine arts areas and an athletic complex enhance the school. The athletic facilities include a gymnasium, a soccer field, and an eight-lane track. In 2001, the school secured a 50-year lease. This lease was for the North Fulton Drive campus. The school also purchased additional land.
The Adair Art, Science and Design Center opened in 2009. Anne Cox Chambers dedicated it in 2010. The dedication honored Vee and Dick Adair. In 2012, Atlanta International School opened an Early Learning Center. This center serves 3K and 4K students. These young learners participate in a full-immersion preschool program. The program includes Chinese, French, German, and Spanish.
Atlanta International School has appeared in several films. “The Blind Side,” “Love, Simon,” and “Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life” all filmed here.
