Beneath the vast Texas sky, discover the McCulloch Cemetery Plaque. This plaque whispers tales of early Texas settlers and their struggles. The McCulloch Cemetery, also known as Mann’s Crossing Cemetery and Medina Baptist Cemetery, holds a significant piece of Texas history. The plaque commemorates Samuel McCulloch Jr., wounded at the Battle of Goliad in 1835. He was one of the first casualties in the Texas Revolution. The land where the cemetery lies was part of his bounty for his service, received in 1850. The oldest marked grave belongs to his father, who died in 1855. Samuel McCulloch Jr. deeded 1.5 acres of his land to the Medina Baptist Church in 1861. The cemetery briefly took on the church’s name. However, the congregation relocated in 1866. The land then transitioned to a community cemetery. The McCulloch Cemetery became the final resting place for area pioneers, Civil War veterans, and prominent figures like potter Louis Meyer. Many other early Bexar County citizens are also buried there. The plaque stands as a silent testament to their lives and contributions to Texas history.
