A captivating figure, forever frozen in bronze, stands before you. This is the Emily D. West Statue, a tribute to a woman shrouded in legend and controversy. Emily D. West, a free woman of mixed race, found herself caught in the tumultuous tides of the Texas Revolution. In 1836, during the escalating conflict, Mexican forces captured West from her place of employment in New Washington, Texas. She was forced to accompany General Santa Anna’s army as they prepared to confront the Texian forces. Legend has it that on April 21, 1836, at the Battle of San Jacinto, West played a pivotal role, albeit a disputed one, in the outcome of the battle. Some accounts claim that she stalled General Santa Anna, distracting him long enough for Sam Houston’s Texian army to launch a surprise attack. This delay, whether intentional or coincidental, is said to have contributed to the decisive Texian victory. However, historical evidence supporting West’s deliberate involvement is scarce. Despite the lack of concrete proof, the legend of Emily D. West, often romanticized as “The Yellow Rose of Texas,” persists. This statue, crafted by renowned sculptor Eddie Dixon, stands as a testament to her enduring presence in Texas lore.
