In 1868, a beacon of hope arose from the ashes of the Confederacy. The Site of Rincon/Douglass School Plaque marks this very spot. It commemorates the Rincon School. This school was San Antonio’s first public school for Black children and adults. The school’s name, Rincon, came from the street it was located on, now known as St. Mary’s Street. The Site of Rincon/Douglass School Plaque reminds us of the school’s humble beginnings. It started in a former Confederate tannery and sawmill, sold by the Freedmen’s Bureau.

The Rincon School quickly became a cornerstone of the community. It educated children by day and adults by night. The two-story building soon proved too small for the growing number of students. By 1888, classes overflowed into rented rooms at St. James AME Church. The Site of Rincon/Douglass School Plaque signifies not just a building, but a community’s thirst for knowledge.

In 1889, philanthropist George R. Brackenridge provided funds to expand the school. His contribution allowed the Rincon School to expand its curriculum. It now included high school level vocational training. This was a significant step, though limited by the prevailing racist beliefs of the time. These beliefs wrongly assumed Black students had limited intellectual capacity. They also aimed to restrict Black employment to manual labor.

The Site of Rincon/Douglass School Plaque also represents a struggle for equality. Between 1870 and 1915, the school underwent several changes, including name changes and expansions. In 1913, the school board decided to sell the Rincon School and its additional buildings. This sparked protests from the Black community. They valued the school’s central downtown location. They were concerned about the proposed new location on the east side. It would create a barrier for many students. Especially those trying to reach the only Black high school in San Antonio. The community’s fight wasn’t about money. It was about access and opportunity.

The school eventually relocated to the east side in 1915. It was renamed Frederick Douglass High School. But the legacy of the original Rincon School remains. The Site of Rincon/Douglass School Plaque stands as a testament to the community’s resilience. It symbolizes their dedication to education in the face of adversity. It is a reminder of the long journey towards educational equality.
