“Brave men shall not die because I faltered” These words echo from the First Officers Training Camp Plaque a testament to courage and sacrifice. This plaque commemorates the first World War I officers training camp established here in May 1917. Three thousand volunteers arrived at Camp Funston then located on the Schasse Ranch. They underwent intense three-month training. 1846 men graduated as second lieutenants. They were dubbed “90-day wonders” due to the rapid training.

This site near San Antonio played a crucial role in the war effort. The trainees embodied their motto serving with distinction many receiving decorations for valor. Remarkably almost 300 of these “first campers” returned to active duty in World War II. Three even became governors Beauford Jester of Texas James R Beverley of Puerto Rico and Charles H Martin of Oregon. Many more achieved prominence in business industry and government.

The First Officers Training Camp Association formed in 1931. Members from across the US and abroad held annual meetings for over fifty years. This plaque stands as a tribute to their legacy.
