This unassuming plaque tells a tale of industry and innovation. Right here on North Santa Rosa Street stands the Menger Soap Works plaque. It commemorates a significant piece of San Antonio’s history. Johann Nicholas Menger a German immigrant arrived in 1847. He established his soap factory in 1850. This wasn’t just any soap factory. It supplied much of the city and southwest Texas. By 1873 Menger had constructed this limestone building. A testament to his success it’s an important example of early industrial architecture. The San Pedro Creek provided the water. The factory operated until the early 20th century. Think of the countless bars of soap produced within these walls. Each one a silent testament to Menger’s entrepreneurial spirit. The plaque reminds us of the family’s contribution. Simon Menger the son expanded the business. S Menger and Sons later known as the San Antonio Soap Works sold over 25000 pounds of soap monthly by the late 1870s. They made soap using animal fat lye and acid. Water from San Pedro Creek was essential. They cooled the mixture in wooden frames. Imagine the smells of animal fat and lye filling the air. The factory’s story continues beyond soap making. It later housed a broom factory and a printing shop. The building faced demolition. The San Antonio Conservation Society saved it in 1970. Today part of the creek’s history remains within these walls. This plaque is more than just a marker. It’s a window into the past a reminder of San Antonio’s industrious past and the legacy of the Menger family.
