Deep in the heart of San Antonio beats a story of resilience. It is a story of community, etched in the very foundations of St. Paul Church Plaque. Organized in 1866, St. Paul United Methodist Church stands as the first church established for African Americans in San Antonio.

Its humble beginnings trace back to Paine Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church South. Many founding members attended services there prior to emancipation. In 1866, Rev. A. Larkin Carper began holding services in the homes of San Antonio’s black families. Soon, Paine Chapel deeded him a building and the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church was founded.

The Freedmen’s Bureau and church members collaborated. They established the Lincoln School for African-American students also in 1866. This marked the beginning of St. Paul’s commitment to education. A frame building was erected in 1872 on land donated by McDaniel Webster. A stone structure replaced it in 1884. The area surrounding the church became known as St. Paul Square. The current sanctuary, a testament to the community’s unwavering faith, was completed in 1922.

St. Paul first focused on community work through a benevolent society. The congregation played a major role in the civil rights movement in San Antonio. Rev. Mack Henson became a well-known voice for equality in the late 1800s. Dr. Green J. Starnes and other members continued the work in the early 20th century. They focused on education, health, and social justice.

In the 1940s, St. Paul established St. Paul House. It provided meeting space and housing for travelers unable to find adequate hotels due to segregation. In 1951, trustees purchased the former Brackenridge colored school building. It became a community educational complex.

As a result of the United Methodist merger, the congregation became St. Paul United Methodist Church in 1967. Today, St. Paul United Methodist Church remains a vital link to San Antonio’s African-American history. It continues to serve as a spiritual leader.

The St. Paul Square Historic District derives its name from the Old St. Paul Methodist Episcopal Church. It was constructed between 1870 and 1880 in the Gothic Revival style. The arrival of the railroad in 1877 spurred significant growth in the area. This was further enhanced by the “Cemetery Line” of the streetcar system during the 1890s.

The St. Paul Church Plaque symbolizes a place where faith and community intertwine. It echoes through generations. It’s a reminder that even in the face of adversity, hope and progress can flourish. The echoes of Louis Armstrong, B.B. King and Fats Domino still ring in the air here. This hallowed ground whispers stories of a vibrant past and a future filled with promise.
