Deep in the heart of Texas, at a crossroads of history and progress, lies the Edens Cemetery Plaque. This unassuming marker tells a tale of early Texan settlers, the Edens family. The plaque marks the site of their farmstead and the cemetery where they laid their loved ones to rest. The story of Edens Cemetery begins in 1831 with John Edens, a patriarch who brought his family to Texas in search of a new life. His son, Banister, would later establish a 350-acre farm on Cibolo Creek, the very land we stand on now. Tragedy struck in 1856 when Mary Walker Edens, Banister’s wife, passed away. She was laid to rest near their farmhouse, her grave marking the start of the Edens Cemetery. Over time, the cemetery became the final resting place for other Edens family members. Napoleon Augustus Edens, a Civil War veteran, and his wife, Mary Faith Grigsby Edens, are among those buried here. They took over the family farm, dedicating themselves to ranching and farming for over three decades. The plaque silently speaks of their resilience and the enduring bonds of family, values as sturdy as the Texan plains themselves. Though the Edens family eventually sold the farm, they ensured the preservation of their ancestral burial ground. The Edens Cemetery Plaque stands as a testament to their legacy, a poignant reminder of the pioneers who carved their lives into the fabric of Texas history.
