In 1959, a seed was planted. The South Texas Medical School received its charter, marking the birth of what we now know as the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio – Long Campus. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio – Long Campus wasn’t always on this sprawling 250-acre site. The first medical students, a mere 15 pioneers, began their journey in 1966 at Trinity University while their future home was under construction. The vision expanded. By 1972, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio – Long Campus had blossomed, adding a dental school, a nursing school, a school of allied health sciences, and a graduate school of biomedical sciences. Dr. Frank Harrison took the helm as the first president, guiding the institution’s growth. Fast forward to 2007, a year of transformation for the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio – Long Campus. Generous donations poured in, including a $25 million gift from the Greehey Family Foundation, followed by another $5 million from Valero Energy Corporation. The Cancer Therapy & Research Center joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio – Long Campus family. Another $25 million donation from Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long led to the campus being renamed in their honor, cementing their legacy. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio – Long Campus continues to evolve. It’s more than just classrooms and clinics. It’s a place where groundbreaking research is conducted, contributing to advancements in cancer treatment, diabetes care, and aging studies. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio – Long Campus remains dedicated to serving the community, extending its reach to Laredo and the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
