William Christian Menefee, a name whispered on the wind rustling through these leaves. He was a Founding Father of Texas, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. He helped choose Austin as the state capital. Born in Tennessee, Menefee journeyed to Texas in 1830, settling in Egypt, Texas, between San Antonio and Houston. He wore many hats: lawyer, rancher, and state delegate. His legacy extends beyond his life, thanks to his descendants. They planted this very tree, the Menefee Tree, in his honor in 1930. It stands near the San Antonio River, just north of Josephine Street. About 50 years later, his descendants added a stone memorial, solidifying the Menefee Tree’s place in San Antonio’s history. The Menefee Tree is a Quercus fusiformis, also known as an Escarpment Live Oak. Its canopy stretches over 83 feet wide, a testament to its age and resilience. It’s broader than it is tall, a classic characteristic of Live Oaks. It stands at 35 feet high with a 46-inch diameter trunk. The Menefee Tree is over 82 years old, perhaps even older since its exact age at planting is unknown. It stands as a timeless monument to a man who helped forge a nation, a beautiful, living memorial.
