“A neo-Gothic gem in the heart of Samarkand” whispers the wind. Before you stands Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church a testament to faith resilience and unexpected history.

This unassuming church is the sole Catholic presence in Samarkand. It stands as a surprising symbol of religious diversity in this ancient city. Its story begins not in peaceful times but amidst the turmoil of World War I. In 1915 Polish Austrian and Hungarian prisoners of war arrived in Samarkand. Many were Catholic. They longed for a place of worship a sanctuary.

Permission was granted. The community bought land on Makhmud Kochgari Street. Architect Nelle designed a beautiful neo-Gothic church. It was completed in 1916. The church served as a beacon of hope for these men far from home. It provided comfort amidst hardship. It was a small act of faith in a harsh land.

The Soviet era brought oppression. The church was closed in 1930. It was repurposed. It became a school. For decades it stood silent a reminder of suppressed faith.

But faith persisted. In 1995 Father Ivan Rolloff and the Catholic community fought to regain their church. Their efforts paid off. In 1997 the building was returned. After restoration work Saint John the Baptist Church reopened on March 27 1999.

Today a Polish priest Father Luciano Szymanski and Polish Franciscan brothers lead the community. The church’s modest interior still holds beauty. Gothic arches a delicate choir balcony ornate entrance and stained glass windows depicting biblical scenes remain. The high bell tower stands tall a symbol of enduring faith in Samarkand. This small church tells a big story a story of hope resilience and the enduring power of faith.
