Have you ever heard about the “Imam of Guidance”? This is the title bestowed upon Abu Mansur al-Maturidi, the founder of Maturidism, a major school of Sunni Islam. Right before you is the Moturidi memorial complex, a tribute to his legacy. This magnificent structure was built on the occasion of his 1225th birthday, replacing a destroyed mausoleum that once stood here. The complex, encompassing four hectares, houses the scientist’s final resting place, along with the graves of other scholars, theologians, and a lush, green park. Standing in awe of the mausoleum’s impressive architecture, you’ll see its 12-meter height, a testament to its significance. The dome, however, reaches 15 meters, topped with a majestic double dome. Its blue majolica tiles, intricately crafted, catch the sun’s rays, creating a dazzling display. The drum of the mausoleum is adorned with an impressive 24 arches surrounding a white marble gravestone. The marble bears inscribed words of wisdom from Abu Mansur al-Maturidi himself, a testament to his enduring intellectual impact on the Muslim world. To the west of the mausoleum lies a smaller, dome-shaped building, while to the north rises a sufa – a raised platform holding tombstones dating back to the 9th to 18th centuries. Though the original mausoleum suffered a tragic fate, the complex you see today provides a monumental setting to honor the life and teachings of Imam Abu Mansur al-Maturidi.
