This granite grove, aptly nicknamed “Stone Grove,” was a gift from the Class of 2000. It’s made up of simple, chair-like structures, each offering a comfortable, albeit slightly precarious perch for those who wish to bask in the shade and quiet of the woods. The chair carvings are a minimalist creation of famed environmental sculptor Richard Nonas, known for his simple, but powerful approach to design. The surrounding foliage, sometimes slightly disturbed, signifies the constant use of the Grove as a spot for quiet reflection. But what was the inspiration behind this unique piece? Nonas drew inspiration from the very landscape of the area. He believed that the natural setting and the materials he used contributed to the powerful sense of peace and serenity that pervades the Grove.
