Whispering secrets from the 16th century, the Flederbachschlössl stands before us. It’s a silent sentinel of time, tucked away in the Parsch district of Salzburg. Don’t let its unassuming exterior fool you. The Flederbachschlössl holds centuries of stories within its walls. The first whispers of the Flederbach estate date back to 1360. But the structure we see today arose in the mid-1500s, thanks to Martin Strasser, a mining entrepreneur from Gastein. Imagine the bustle of construction as this grand manor took shape. Strasser’s vision has stood the test of time, remaining largely unchanged since its completion. Over the years, the Flederbachschlössl has seen a procession of intriguing owners. One notable resident was Michael Paumann, the mayor of Salzburg from 1611 to 1652. Picture him pacing these halls, perhaps contemplating city affairs. In 1912, the estate took on a regal air when it was purchased by Heinrich Ferdinand von Habsburg-Lothringen. Today, it remains a private residence, owned by the Habsburg-Tuscany family. Although we can’t explore its interior, take a moment to admire its classic Salzburg design. The four-story structure, with its rectangular footprint and sturdy corner buttresses, speaks to a bygone era. Notice the steep hipped roof, accentuated by four charming towers. These towers, hexagonal with pyramid roofs, are typical of manor houses in the Inn and Salzach valleys. Hidden from view, the ground and first floors boast vaulted ceilings, whispering tales of centuries past. The upper floors feature flat ceilings, some adorned with delicate stuccowork. The Flederbachschlössl stands as a testament to Salzburg’s rich history, a tangible link to a fascinating past.
