Gazing at the Berchtesgadener Ache, it’s hard not to feel a sense of awe. This isn’t just a river. It’s a vital artery, a churning, swirling vein that has pulsed through the heart of this region for centuries. The Berchtesgadener Ache is born from the union of two powerful rivers, the Königsseer Ache and the Ramsauer Ache, right here amidst the bustle of Berchtesgaden’s Bahnhofkreisverkehr. This meeting point, a roundabout where nature and human engineering intersect, marks the beginning of the Ache’s 17.8-kilometer journey. From its source at roughly 540 meters above sea level, the Berchtesgadener Ache carves a path northward, losing 81 meters in elevation before it even crosses the border into Austria. The river then continues for another 4.86 kilometers through Austria, now known as the Königsseeache. It meanders through Grödig, Anif, and Hallein, finally surrendering its waters to the Salzach River near the Ursteinbrücke. The Berchtesgadener Ache drains the entire Berchtesgaden basin and even some bordering areas in Austria, like the Hirschbichl region in Weißbach bei Lofer via the Hirschbichlklausgraben. This results in a substantial catchment area of 418.19 square kilometers. The river’s width typically ranges between 20 and 30 meters, but in certain stretches, it broadens dramatically, reaching 40 to even 50 meters wide. The Berchtesgadener Ache isn’t merely a scenic waterway. It’s a powerful force classified as a Wildbach, a torrential stream, by the Bavarian Environment Agency and considered a flood risk area. It’s a testament to the raw energy of nature, a reminder of the delicate balance between beauty and potential danger. Along its course, the river is harnessed for hydroelectric power. Weirs and canals divert its flow to power plants, including the Gartenau plant in Berchtesgaden, the Fischer plant in Marktschellenberg, and the Hangendenstein plant in Austria, which utilizes the diverted Almkanal. It also serves a more mundane, but essential, purpose: it acts as a recipient for treated wastewater from the Berchtesgaden and Marktschellenberg wastewater treatment plants. And of course, the Berchtesgadener Ache offers moments of simple joy. In summer, accessible spots like the Hanserersteg become refreshing swimming areas. Rafting tours navigate its currents when the water level allows. So, as you stand here, beside the churning waters of the Berchtesgadener Ache, remember, you’re witnessing more than just a river. You’re witnessing the lifeblood of a region, a confluence of nature’s power, human ingenuity, and the simple pleasures of a cool dip on a hot summer’s day.
