Did you know the Bundespolizei in Salzburg has a rich history? Its roots stretch back to 1922. That’s when Salzburg became home to one of Austria’s first Federal Police Directorates. This was a big deal. The city’s existing security force became part of the national Bundespolizei. The city council was happy to hand over responsibility. They couldn’t afford the growing costs anymore. The Federal government agreed to cover a large portion. The new Bundespolizei Directorate was established in the Toskana Trakt a significant building in the city’s history. Interestingly a unique condition was part of the agreement between the city and the federal government. Only people of German ethnicity could be employed. The official language was also set to be German.

Dr Otto Steinhaeusl a close associate of Vienna’s police chief Johann Schober became the director of Salzburg’s new police force. This appointment was quite remarkable. Steinhaeusl’s career took a dramatic turn later. He became involved in a Nazi coup attempt. He was imprisoned. He was later pardoned and he rose to prominence again in the Nazi regime. He even became Vienna’s police president. He tragically died of cancer in 1940. His story highlights the tumultuous political landscape of the time. It also shows the impact on the Bundespolizei’s early history.

The Bundespolizei’s organizational structure also reflects the broader historical context. In the 1930s the unstable political climate led to changes. A ‘General Directorate for Public Security’ was created. Security directors were appointed to each province. These changes were meant to strengthen internal security. World War II brought about significant alterations. The organization adapted to the Nazi regime. After the war the pre-war structure was reinstated. In Salzburg the Bundespolizei Directorate’s existence came to an end in 2012. This was due to a security authorities reform. The Directorate was merged into the state police directorate. The Bundespolizei continued its vital role in maintaining law and order. The history of the Bundespolizei in Salzburg isn’t just about enforcing laws. It’s a reflection of Austria’s political evolution. It’s a story that continues to unfold even today.
