Unexpectedly serene the Salzachsee greets you. Its calm waters reflect the sky above. This seemingly tranquil spot has a surprising history. The Salzachsee isn’t a natural wonder. It’s a collection of artificial lakes. Their existence is a direct result of motorway construction in 1938. Rubble was mined from this area. This created the lakes unintentionally.

The mining continued after the war. Sound barriers were built along the newly finished motorway. This motorway section only opened to traffic in 1955. For ten years before it served a different purpose. It was used as a race track and for sports events.

The Salzachsee isn’t one lake. It’s a group of lakes and ponds. The largest are the Großer Salzachsee and the Lieferinger Badesee. The latter is a popular swimming area. The Vogelsee is more remote and natural. It’s a significant breeding area for local birds. There’s also the Karlsbader Weiher. Its name honors the thousands of ethnic Germans expelled from Czechoslovakia after World War II. Many found new homes in Salzburg.

The lakes weren’t just a result of construction. They played an ecological role. The Salzachsee and surrounding wetlands are a valuable ecosystem. They partially compensated for habitat loss from river training in the 1950s and 60s. So while the Salzachsee began as an accidental byproduct of progress it transformed into a vibrant recreational area and important habitat. Today you can see families enjoying the Lieferinger Badesee. Others walk or cycle the paths around the various lakes. The Salzachsee has found its peace. It stands as a reminder that even unintended consequences can create something beautiful.
