Gazing up at the majestic Druid Hills Presbyterian Church, one might wonder about the stories held within its aged stones. This isn’t just any church. Druid Hills Presbyterian Church boasts a rich history, deeply intertwined with the vibrant tapestry of Atlanta. The church’s journey began in 1883 in downtown Atlanta. It was originally known as Fourth Presbyterian Church. By 1910, the congregation sought a new home, relocating to the intersection of North Highland Avenue and Blue Ridge Avenue in northeast Atlanta. They also adopted a new name: Druid Hills Presbyterian Church. The church’s nomadic journey continued in 1924. The congregation settled at its current location on Ponce de Leon Avenue. This land held a unique history. It was purchased from Lucian Lamar Knight, a prominent church member and the founder of the Georgia Archives. The present sanctuary, a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture, was designed by renowned Atlanta architect Francis Palmer Smith. Smith, the head of the architecture school at Georgia Tech, was no stranger to the area. He had designed numerous buildings in the nearby Druid Hills neighborhood. Commissioned in 1939, the sanctuary was completed the following year. An expert on Smith’s work has praised the Druid Hills Presbyterian Church sanctuary. They described it as “among Smith’s masterworks of ecclesiastical architecture.” The sanctuary’s beauty is further enhanced by the exquisite stained glass. Created by the prestigious Willet Studios in Philadelphia, the windows bathe the interior in a kaleidoscope of colors. Smith personally designed one stained glass segment in honor of his wife, who passed away in 1940. Interestingly, across from this spiritual haven stands Briarcliff Plaza, one of Atlanta’s first strip malls. This juxtaposition of the sacred and the commercial speaks volumes about the evolving landscape of the city. Druid Hills Presbyterian Church is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
