Ever wondered where Salzburg’s finest horses quenched their thirst? The Hofmarstallschwemme Mural stands before you a testament to Baroque artistry and equestrian elegance. This horse pond is also known as Marstallschwemme. It sits proudly on Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz in Salzburg’s Old Town.
Archbishop Johann Ernst Thun-Hohenstein initiated significant architectural and artistic changes to the Salzburg Residence in the late 17th century. As part of these upgrades Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach designed the Hofmarstallschwemme in 1695. Fischer von Erlach also shaped Salzburg during its Baroque peak. He was responsible for the Trinity Church, the Kollegienkirche and the Markuskirche. The Hofmarstallschwemme became an integral part of the redesigned court stables.
The sculpture “Horse Tamer” is at the heart of the Hofmarstallschwemme. Michael Bernhard Mandl created it in 1695. Art historians like Hans Sedlmayr have noted the sculpture’s resemblance to ancient Roman horse groups. These groups were known through drawings from Bernini’s workshop. The “Horse Tamer” depicts a rearing horse led by a figure. It originally faced the Hofmarstall.
In 1732 Archbishop Leopold Anton Firmian renovated the Hofmarstallschwemme. At this time, they shifted the statue’s orientation. It was turned to face the city. Firmian’s coat of arms adorns the base. The inscription praises Firmian for restoring ancient beauty with wondrous novelty.
Franz Anton Ebner created the murals in the background. These murals feature various horses. They have been repainted several times with the last time in 1960. Traffic increases in 1860 caused the removal of the left gate to Neutor and two mural panels.
The Hofmarstallschwemme is a listed monument. The Sigmundstor nearby leads into Austria’s oldest street tunnel. Today the Hofmarstallschwemme no longer serves its original purpose. Yet it remains a beautiful reminder of Salzburg’s rich history. People sometimes toss coins into it. However, it will never be the Trevi Fountain.
