Did you know that this powerful Kunststein block commemorates the brave Salzburg pioneers and sappers who lost their lives in the World Wars? This is the Pionierdenkmal. We’re standing in the Lehener Park now. This memorial is a testament to their courage and sacrifice.
The Pionierdenkmal wasn’t always here. The Österreichischer Kameradschaftsbund, an Austrian comradeship federation, erected it. They also take care of it. Professor Schmiedbauer designed it. The inauguration took place in October 1965. Landeshauptmann Dr. Lechner attended.
Look closely at the Pionierdenkmal. Notice how it widens towards the top. It stands on a plateau with steps. Low boxwood hedges surround the area offering a place for reflection.
The Pionierdenkmal is more than just stone. A serpentinite band encircles the upper part. This band bears inscriptions on its long sides. “Ihren heldenmütigen Kameraden” is written on one side. This translates to “To their heroic comrades”. The inscription continues “Die Pioniere und Sappeure” meaning “The Pioneers and Sappers”.
You can see iron thorn crowns below the inscriptions. Look at the short sides of the Pionierdenkmal. Here, you’ll find engraved Iron Crosses. The years 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 are also etched here marking the World Wars.
Above the block, a tilted ship’s anchor rests on its own base. This anchor made of iron symbolizes the pioneers’ engineering skills. They were masters of bridging and overcoming obstacles.
The Pionierdenkmal stands not far from the former water training area of the Salzburg pioneers. This location connects the memorial to the pioneers’ activities. They trained nearby preparing for their duties.
Every year on Traditionstag the comrades of the pioneers and sappers lay down a wreath here at the Pionierdenkmal to commemorate their fallen comrades.
