The Kajetanerkirche, a stately church rising from the Salzburg cityscape, is more than just a place of worship. Its story stretches back centuries, woven into the very fabric of the city’s history. Imagine, if you will, the year 1150. Here, where we stand, stood a simple church, dedicated to Saint Anna. It was a time of growth and change for Salzburg, and the church served a small community. But over time, the city expanded. The church became a place of healing too, with a hospital standing beside it. Then, in the late 1600s, Archbishop Max Gandolf von Kuenburg had a grand vision. He wanted to establish a seminary, a place for priests to study and grow their faith. He chose the site of Saint Anna’s church, believing it held a special significance. The Theatiner Order, known as the Cajetaners, was entrusted with leading this seminary. The Kajetanerkirche, as we know it today, was built under the direction of Giovanni Gaspare Zuccalli, a skilled architect who also shaped the Nonntal church. His vision, however, faced challenges. The Archbishop who oversaw the project wasn’t quite as enthusiastic about the Theatiner’s style, so Zuccalli had to fight hard to finish the church. The Kajetanerkirche was finally consecrated in 1700, marking the arrival of Italian Baroque in Salzburg. It’s a masterpiece of architecture, with a spacious dome that floods the interior with light. Inside, the church is adorned with intricate stucco work, creating a truly festive atmosphere. But there’s more. Look up. In the dome, you’ll find a fresco by Paul Troger. It depicts Saint Cajetan being taken into heaven, a captivating scene that captures the essence of the church’s dedication. Beyond the beauty, a hidden secret waits. Tucked away, a stairway leads to a second floor, a place where a tradition remains strong: the Holy Staircase. Built in 1712, it mirrors the Scala Santa in Rome, a stairway said to be from Pilate’s palace in Jerusalem. The Holy Staircase is a place of quiet reflection, a symbol of faith and devotion. Each step is climbed on one’s knees, a reminder of Jesus’s suffering on his way to Calvary. The Kajetanerkirche is not just a church; it’s a testament to history, faith, and enduring traditions. It is a place filled with stories that resonate through the ages, reminding us of the city’s rich past and the enduring power of belief.
