It was originally a fortified manor, built by the Chalasperger, a powerful noble family, in the 13th century. While the original structure has been altered significantly over the years, the castle’s essence remains. The Chalasperger were once lords of the castle, but faced a dangerous enemy – the Archbishop of Salzburg. After a fierce battle, the Chalasperger family fell into disfavor and were forced to leave their castle. However, this wasn’t the end of Schloss Kahlsperg’s story. Over the centuries, the ownership changed repeatedly. This impressive building has been owned by the Nußdorfer family, Leonhard Harder, Hans Panicher, Viktor Christallnigg, Wolf Sigmund von Haunsperg, Katharina von Lodron, Johann B. Maffei, and finally, Franziskanerinnen, the Franciscan Sisters of Hallein.
The Franciscan Sisters turned the castle into a senior residence, now a peaceful haven for the elderly. Today, the castle stands as a testament to the resilience of its history and the legacy of the families who have shaped its destiny.
