Time has etched its passage onto Schloss Urstein’s stones. Each weathered brick whispers tales of centuries past. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to Salzburg’s rich history.

Schloss Urstein stands proudly. It commands a rocky terrace overlooking the Salzach River. Its history stretches back far beyond its current form. The first recorded mention of Urstan dates back to 1151. Archbishop Eberhard I then granted the estate to the canons of Salzburg Cathedral. Think of the power struggles. The political maneuvering that shaped this very spot.

Leonhard Golser was the first to claim Urstein as a noble title in 1461. Generations of families followed leaving behind their mark on Schloss Urstein. Cristan Diether. Paul Altmann. The Ducker von Haslau family owned Schloss Urstein for a long time. They significantly remodeled it into a classic Salzburg manor house with four corner towers.

The Schloss Urstein we see today though. It rose between 1689 and 1691. Alfons von Haslau oversaw its construction. He transformed a simple manor into this magnificent structure. Notice the rectangular shape. The three full stories. The mansard roof with its elegant gables and dormers. The elaborate stucco ceilings in the upper floors are original. So are some doors and tile stoves. One stove is particularly special. It hails from the renowned Strobl workshop. A workshop famous for its work in Salzburg’s Steingasse. That tile stove provided warmth in the old castle before it even found its way into this one.

The Ducker von Haslau family held onto Schloss Urstein until 1837. They then sold it to Anselm Freiherr von Imhof. Many owners followed. Count Filipp Boos Waldeck. The Kuhlmann family. Finally. The Akademie Schloss Urstein Privatstiftung. It now runs the Schloss as a seminar and education center.

Schloss Urstein’s story isn’t just one of ownership changes. It’s a saga of resilience. Adaptation. Of surviving the passage of time. As you stand before it. Feel the weight of history. Feel the echoes of past residents. This isn’t just a building. It’s a story waiting to be rediscovered. A story that continues to unfold.
