What’s in a name? For the Mirabell Garden, that’s a tale of love, loss, and a dash of revenge. Right now, you’re standing in what was once a grand gesture of affection from Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau to his mistress, Salome Alt. He built this palace, originally called Altenau, for her and their 15 children! Scandalous, right? But our story doesn’t end there. The passionate affair, unfortunately, didn’t last. Wolf Dietrich fell from power, imprisoned in the Hohensalzburg Fortress. His vengeful nephew, Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, took over and decided to erase his uncle’s legacy. He banished Salome and her children, renaming the estate “Mirabell,” meaning “beautiful” in Latin. A bit ironic, don’t you think?

Over time, the Mirabell Garden underwent a Baroque transformation, becoming the masterpiece we see today. Stroll through the Grand Parterre, the oldest part of the garden, and admire the marble statues depicting Roman gods and goddesses. Each one holds a story, a connection to ancient myths and legends. Notice the four groups surrounding the central fountain? They depict scenes of abduction and struggle, representing the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water.

As you walk towards the palace, seek out the hidden Susanna Fountain, tucked away between the trees. It’s a remnant of Wolf Dietrich’s original garden, possibly a tribute to his beloved Salome.

Before you reach the palace, climb the steps near the Hedge Theatre. From here, you can see a glimpse of a small wooden house in the neighboring Mozarteum Foundation’s garden. Legend says Mozart was locked in that very house while composing parts of his famous opera, The Magic Flute, to ensure he met the deadline!

Continue your journey to the whimsical Dwarf Garden, a popular attraction featuring 17 dwarf statues. These figures were initially created for the amusement of the archbishop and his guests, each representing a month or a playful scene. Can you guess which dwarf was featured in the iconic film “The Sound of Music”?

Finally, stand at the foot of the Pegasus Fountain, its winged horse a symbol of ambition and, ironically, a warning against hubris. This fountain, originally located near Salzburg Cathedral, also graced the silver screen in “The Sound of Music.” Remember the “Do-Re-Mi” musical sequence? The steps Maria and the children dance upon are right here!

Mirabell Garden is more than just a beautiful place. It’s a testament to enduring love, political intrigue, and artistic brilliance. So, as you wander through these enchanting grounds, let your imagination soar and the stories of the Mirabell Garden come to life.
