A curious tale unfolds at the Second Church of Christ, Scientist, in Salt Lake City. It’s a story of resilience, relocation, and a dedication to debt-free devotion. The Second Church of Christ, Scientist, emerged from the vibrant growth of First Church in 1909. A group of 115 members envisioned a new space for their growing community. They embarked on a journey to create their own sanctuary. This led them to 566 East South Temple. Here, under the guidance of architect G. H. Kent, the Second Church of Christ, Scientist, took shape. In 1918, the congregation celebrated the dedication of their new, debt-free building. This dedication mirrored the financial prudence of the First Church, which also opened its doors free of debt in 1898. The Second Church of Christ, Scientist, thrived at this location for several decades. However, change was on the horizon. In the early 1960s, the church building was sold. The congregation, ever adaptable, found a new home. In 1965, the Second Church of Christ, Scientist, held its first services at its current location, 1175 Foothill Drive. This move marked another chapter in the church’s history. It showcased the congregation’s commitment to their faith and community. So, as you stand before the Second Church of Christ, Scientist, remember its journey. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Christian Science community in Salt Lake City.
