What if a chapel could embody the spirit of a civil rights icon? The Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel stands as a testament to Dr. King’s legacy. It is a beacon of hope and a center for non-violent social change.

This chapel is located on the campus of Morehouse College. Morehouse is a historically Black men’s liberal arts college in Atlanta. It was built to honor one of the school’s most prestigious alumni Martin Luther King Jr.

The Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel is part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change. This center attracts over 650000 visitors each year. It includes Freedom Hall, the Archives and Administration Building, Freedom Walk, and the Chapel of All Faiths.

Davis Brody Bond Founding Partner J. Max Bond designed the King Center. He worked throughout the mid-1980s to upgrade the chapel. He also improved the site lighting and finishes. Bond developed a maintenance program for the buildings.

The building’s design reflects the goals of the center. It uses locally produced brick. This humble material allowed greater opportunity for minority construction workers. The design creates a safe and welcoming environment.

A bronze statue of Martin Luther King Jr. stands at the chapel’s entrance. The statue’s base is inscribed with King’s words. An obelisk honoring Howard Thurman also stands nearby. The base of the Thurman Obelisk contains the remains of Thurman and his wife.

The Gandhi King Ikeda Awards for Peace are awarded at the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel. These awards recognize individuals who promote peace and reconciliation. They are named after Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Daisaku Ikeda.

The chapel is home to the Gandhi–King–Ikeda Reconciliation Institute. This institute promotes dialogue and understanding between different cultures and religions.

The Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel replaced Sale and Harkness halls in 1978. Harkness Hall now belongs to Clark Atlanta University.
