Three rough stone slabs. That’s what forms the base of The Altar. This isn’t just any altar. It’s a powerful sculpture in Salt Lake City’s Gilgal Sculpture Garden. Created by Thomas Battersby Child Jr it’s a striking interpretation of an ancient sacrificial altar. Child meticulously selected three stone slabs from Wayne County. He envisioned them as the surface of a sacred place.

The Altar is more than just stone. It’s a testament to sacrifice. At one end sits a brick furnace. This is where offerings were symbolically burned. The grease from these offerings was lit in a “lamp of truth”. This ritual signified a covenant. It’s a fascinating blend of religious symbolism and artistic expression.

Child’s inspiration stemmed from the writings of Joseph Smith. The founder of the LDS Church described ancient sacrificial altars. Child’s artwork reflects this reverence for the past. Three large stones lie on the ground. They are engraved with the names of biblical sacrificial sites. The Altar perfectly showcases the artist’s deep belief in the connection between religion and sacrifice. It’s a profound statement on faith and its historical context.

The Altar has been lovingly preserved. Friends of Gilgal Garden have repaired and stabilized the stone slabs. They’ve also restored the furnace masonry. This ensures that future generations can witness this remarkable piece. You can almost feel the weight of history as you stand before this magnificent creation. The Altar stands as a unique piece of art and a reflection on the past. It connects ancient beliefs with modern artistic expression. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting Salt Lake City. Take a moment to appreciate its rich history and symbolism. Let its message of sacrifice resonate within you.
