Were you aware that Davis County is Utah’s smallest county by land area? This county in northern Utah is more than just its size. It’s a place brimming with history and growth.

Davis County was created in 1850. It was named after Daniel C. Davis. He was a captain in the Mormon Battalion.

Farmington became the county seat. Its central location was ideal. It sat midway between the Weber River to the north and the Jordan River to the south.

The county’s boundaries shifted several times in its early years. It wasn’t until 1880 that the borders stabilized. Davis County gained islands and waters from the Great Salt Lake. These areas were previously part of Salt Lake County. Since then the boundaries of Davis County have remained unchanged.

Initially Davis County grew slowly. The arrival of the Utah Central Rail Road in 1870 changed everything. Mechanized agriculture became more common. Commerce surged. Banks opened, roads improved and new water systems were established. Homes even got electricity.

But by 1940, the population was still only about 16000. The establishment of Hill Air Force Base transformed Davis County. Civilian employment soared after World War II. The county’s population doubled between 1940 and 1950. It doubled again between 1950 and 1960. This was part of a nationwide suburban boom. By 1990, Davis County had 188000 residents. In 2000, there were 239000. The population is above 360000 today.

Davis County’s geography is unique. It lies between the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Range. The Wasatch Range rises to 9707 feet at Thurston Peak. The Great Salt Lake’s elevation averages around 4200 feet. The water level varies greatly, which affects the lake’s size.

Antelope Island is part of Davis County. It is the largest island in the Great Salt Lake. This entire island is a state park. It protects natural scenery and wildlife. Bighorn sheep, pronghorn and a bison herd live here.

The Wasatch Front is the inhabited area. It lies between the lake and the mountains. This narrow strip restricts north-south transportation.

Davis County has a diverse climate. The eastern parts have a humid continental climate. The western parts have a Mediterranean climate. Summers are dry and hot. Winters are cold and wet, but rarely frigid. Snow is common in winter. High areas get up to 90 inches annually. The valley floor gets at least 60 inches.

Annual precipitation averages 18 to 25 inches. Spring is the wettest season. Summer is the driest. Summer temperatures often exceed 95°F. The low humidity makes it comfortable. Winter temperatures sometimes drop below 0°F but not for long.

Davis County’s weather can be extreme. Lake-effect snow hits the southern portion hard. Canyon winds from the east can cause damage. Wind gusts have exceeded 100 mph.

Davis County is often called a bedroom community. Many residents commute to work in other counties. South Davis County commuters face traffic. The Legacy Parkway and FrontRunner commuter rail help this problem.

Farmington houses the Lagoon Amusement Park. It is the main amusement park on the Wasatch Front. Hill Air Force Base is Davis County’s largest employer. It contributes significantly to the local and state economy.

Davis County has grown from a small agricultural area to a bustling suburban center. Its history, geography, and climate have shaped its identity. It’s a unique part of Utah.
