The Utah State Correctional Facility stands as a stark reminder of the complexities of justice. It replaced the aging Draper prison, a facility increasingly surrounded by suburban sprawl. The new prison, located on 170 acres at 1480 North 8000 West, boasts 1.3 million square feet of modern design. It houses both male and female inmates, in facilities ranging from minimum security to supermax. The Bear Facility houses the general male population. The Antelope Facility houses men in restricted populations. The Currant Facility caters to the geriatric and mental health needs of the male population. The Dell Facility houses the female inmates. The Utah State Correctional Facility is more than just walls and fences. It’s a place where stories unfold, stories of crime and punishment, rehabilitation and despair. It is also the only prison in Utah authorized to carry out capital punishment. Executions are performed by lethal injection or, for inmates sentenced before May 2004, by firing squad. This grim reality adds another layer to the prison’s already complex narrative. The first execution within these walls took place on August 8, 2024. Taberon Honie was put to death, marking the state’s first execution since 2010. The decision to relocate the prison was a long and complex process. A 2005 study deemed the cost of moving far greater than the potential value of the old prison’s land. Yet, in 2015, the state legislature voted to move forward with the project, driven by the desire for improved treatment options and a more modern facility. The Utah State Correctional Facility is a world unto itself, hidden in plain sight.
