Ever wondered what it’s like to glide silently beneath the bustling heart of an airport?

Welcome to the Plane Train at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. This isn’t just any train. It’s a marvel of engineering a subterranean marvel carrying over a quarter of a million passengers each day. Since its opening in 1980 it has become the world’s busiest airport people mover. Initially built by Westinghouse Electric Corporation it now operates under Alstom.

The Plane Train isn’t just about getting from point A to point B. It’s a journey through the airport’s hidden depths. Imagine three underground tunnels. The Plane Train zips through two of them. The middle tunnel is a pedestrian walkway complete with moving sidewalks. Eight stations serve each concourse. These stations boast platform screen doors with flashing red lights a safety feature implemented since the mid-1980s.

Think of the logistics. Eleven four-car trains run during peak hours. During off-peak hours trains use crossover tracks to switch tunnels. The system operates 24/7 in a unique shuttle mode with only two trains running on a single track. This is all part of a carefully choreographed dance. A dance that keeps this vital artery of the airport pumping.

Each train features multilingual displays. Announcements utilize the NATO phonetic alphabet for clarity except for Concourse D. It uses the APCO alphabet. This avoids confusion with Delta Air Lines. Delta is the airport’s major hub. The voices behind these announcements have changed over the years. From the friendly tones of a local radio personality to synthesized voices nicknamed “HAL” and ultimately to the professional voice of Sharon Feingold. Now a new voice is set to take over.

Beyond the technical aspects the Plane Train is also a testament to human ingenuity. 123 employees work three shifts to maintain this seamless operation. Despite the trains being self-driving two control operators are always on duty. They monitor the system and react to any issues.

The Plane Train continues to evolve. A new turn-around track is under construction. This will further enhance efficiency reducing passenger wait times. New Innovia APM 300R railcars are being added. They will replace some of the older models.

So next time you’re at ATL take a moment to appreciate the silent engineering marvel that is the Plane Train. It’s more than just transportation. It’s a testament to efficient design and innovation in the heart of the world’s busiest airport.
