Dream of taking flight? South Valley Regional Airport is where those dreams often take their first wings. It is located about 13.5 miles south of Salt Lake City International Airport. This airport sits in West Jordan, Utah.

South Valley Regional Airport wasn’t always its current name. Originally, it was Municipal Airport No. 2. Construction started in July 1941. It officially opened around July 15, 1942. The Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce proposed it in late 1940. The aim was to relieve Salt Lake’s main airport. This allowed the main airport to focus on army and commercial transport.

Today South Valley Regional Airport supports various activities. These include business flying and law enforcement services. Fire and rescue operations also use it. Many people come here for recreational flying. Flight training is popular. Air charters also operate from here. The Utah National Guard Army Aviation Support Facility calls this airfield home.

The airport has a single runway. It runs in a north-south direction. Runway 16/34 is 5,862 feet long. It is 100 feet wide. The surface is made of asphalt. It can handle single-wheel loads of 30,000 pounds. Double-wheel configurations can reach 43,000 pounds.

Pilot-controlled medium-intensity runway lights guide pilots. Precision approach path indicators are on each runway end. Runway end identifier lights enhance visibility. An automated weather observing system provides continuous updates. You can access this information at 801-562-0271.

Landside facilities run linearly along the west side. You’ll find the Utah National Guard facility there. Fixed base operators offer services. Aircraft maintenance hangars are available. There are 100 aircraft tie-down spaces. A combination of 155 T-hangars and shade hangars provide storage. The Salt Lake City Department of Airports manages these. Fuel storage facilities are also present. Access roadways make navigation easy. The airport sells both Jet A and 100 low-lead aviation gasoline. Aircraft maintenance services are readily available.

The Salt Lake City Department of Airports provides various services. These include fueling and ground handling. Aircraft storage and parking are available. Ground power units are also offered. A third-party maintenance provider is Advantage Aviation. They can be reached at 801-755-5398.
