Picture the remnants of old brick walls, weathered by time and covered in colorful graffiti. This is the Old Decatur Water Works, a place that once quenched the thirst of a growing city but now stands as a silent testament to industrial history. The Old Decatur Water Works was a critical piece of infrastructure that supplied clean water to the city of Decatur for over 40 years, beginning in 1907. This site played a crucial role in the city’s development, providing the essential resource that fueled its expansion.

But the story of the Old Decatur Water Works goes back further, even before the turn of the 20th century. In the 1850s, a flour mill stood on the banks of Burnt Fork Creek, powered by the water’s force. It is from this mill the names “Mason Mill Road” and “Mason Mill Park” are derived. This site was once a hub of productivity, the beating heart of the waterworks.

And just like everything in life, the Old Decatur Water Works had its fair share of changes and challenges. During World War II, it became a vital source of water for a nearby naval air station and an army hospital. The property was strictly for military purposes, leaving the park unused and unmaintained. Unfortunately, the waterworks fell into disrepair and disuse after the war, eventually becoming a ghost of its former self.

The city of Decatur, in an effort to revitalize the area, transformed the Old Decatur Water Works into a public park in the 1930s. This park added amenities such as granite benches, cooking grills, and a stone bridge over Burnt Fork Creek. Sadly, the dams were dynamited, and the reservoirs were drained in the mid-1960s due to flooding concerns.

Today, the Old Decatur Water Works is a site of historical significance, a reminder of a different era when water was a precious resource. While it is no longer functional, the spirit of this site lives on in the memories of the people who once relied on it and in the stories it tells us about the city’s development. The Old Decatur Water Works is a poignant testament to the ever-changing nature of our cities, a place where past and present converge in a captivating blend of history and nature.
