The Conservatory’s history is rich with famous names. Rubinstein ran the institution until 1891. He set exceptionally high standards. He established a rigorous curriculum demanding entrance exams. He handpicked professors. Tchaikovsky is just one of many celebrated alumni. Igor Stravinsky Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich all graced its halls. Shostakovich even taught here in the 1960s further cementing its reputation. The youngest student ever admitted was four-year-old Clara Rockmore a future theremin virtuoso.

The Conservatory’s name changed as Saint Petersburg’s name changed over the 20th century. It was first the Petrograd Conservatory then the Leningrad Conservatory. In 1944 it took its current name. This is in honor of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. He was a professor here for almost 40 years. His bronze monument stands proudly outside in Theatre Square.

The building itself is remarkable. It was built in the 1890s. The construction site was previously home to the old Bolshoi Theatre. The Conservatory still retains the grand staircase and landing from the original theatre. This grand building houses an opera and ballet theatre and the impressive Glazunov concert hall.

Today the Conservatory educates over 1300 students. It boasts a faculty of more than 400 teachers. Since 1975 it has welcomed over 250 international students. These students hail from 38 countries worldwide. This is a testament to the Conservatory’s global reach and enduring influence.

The Conservatory offers a wide range of programs. These include performance pedagogy composition conducting and musicology. Students can pursue specialist degrees or masters’ degrees. There are even postgraduate and doctoral courses. A ten-month preparatory course helps international students learn Russian. The Conservatory’s graduates are highly sought after worldwide.
