A city of homes schools and places of worship. That’s Decatur’s motto. But Decatur is so much more than that simple phrase suggests.

Decatur Georgia stands proudly as DeKalb County’s county seat. It’s a vibrant city nestled in the heart of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Established in 1823 it boasts a rich history. It was named after Commodore Stephen Decatur a celebrated US Navy hero.

Long before European settlers arrived the Decatur area was a lush forest. Two Native American trails intersected here. One the Sandtown trail stretched from the Chattahoochee River. The other the Shallowford trail ran along what’s now Clairmont Road. This strategic location became the heart of Decatur.

The American Civil War left its mark. Decatur became a pivotal point during Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign. In July 1864 Union troops under Major-General James McPherson occupied the town. A fierce skirmish took place near the old courthouse. Confederate cavalry attacked Union supply wagons. A historical marker still commemorates this battle. A Confederate soldier described the fighting as very hot.

Decatur experienced significant changes in the 20th century. Atlanta’s expansion enveloped it. The city faced white flight and a decline in property values. But Decatur persevered. Strategic downtown development plans revitalized the city. Decatur transformed into a trendy mixed-use district. Its progressive spirit and high level of citizen involvement became nationally recognized.

Today Decatur thrives. It’s known for its thriving arts scene. The Decatur Arts Festival attracts many visitors each May. The AJC Decatur Book Festival is one of the nation’s largest independent book festivals. Decatur’s food scene earned it a spot among the South’s tastiest towns. Its lively restaurants breweries and distilleries reflect its unique character.

Decatur’s downtown and residential areas are filled with historic buildings. Many sites are on the National Register of Historic Places. The South Candler Street-Agnes Scott College Historic District is one example. Agnes Scott College and Columbia Theological Seminary are prominent institutions. These institutions add to Decatur’s rich cultural heritage. The city’s blend of history progress and community spirit truly makes it special. Decatur Georgia isn’t just a city it’s a story waiting to be discovered.
