Across the Neva River, the Foundry Bridge stands as a testament to engineering and history. The Foundry Bridge isn’t just a way to cross the river. It’s a symbol of St. Petersburg’s resilience and ingenuity. The Foundry Bridge is one of the city’s many drawbridges, opening nightly for river traffic to pass. Did you know the bridge’s original design was subject to strict conditions? One constraint even specified the iron used in its construction had to come from England or Germany. Between 1875 and 1879, engineer Amand Stuve tackled the challenging task of building the Foundry Bridge under these unusual circumstances. Originally illuminated by electrical lights, the Foundry Bridge stands out among the bridges crossing the Neva. It was a groundbreaking innovation at the time, facing opposition from the city’s gas monopoly which wanted to keep gas lights. The Foundry Bridge’s history goes even further back. In 1865, a temporary floating bridge at the same location was destroyed, prompting Tsar Alexander II to commission a new permanent bridge. This area had a history as a crossing point. Even the Swedes used this spot before Peter the Great claimed the Neva delta. The Foundry Bridge also played a role in the city’s adaptation to the Volga-Baltic Waterway, requiring refurbishment in 1967. Today, the Foundry Bridge connects the Kutuzov and Robespierre embankments on the left bank with the Arsenal and Pirogovskaya embankments on the right. As you stand here, on the banks of the Neva, take a moment to appreciate the Foundry Bridge. It is not just a steel and stone structure. It’s a vital artery, a historical landmark, and a beautiful piece of St. Petersburg’s skyline. The Foundry Bridge whispers tales of progress, innovation, and the enduring spirit of this remarkable city.
