Stepping into the realm of a bygone era, we find ourselves at The F. Chaliapin Memorial Apartment. This isn’t just an apartment; it’s a time capsule. It’s a portal to the life of Fyodor Chaliapin, Russia’s legendary opera singer. The F. Chaliapin Memorial Apartment, located on Graftio Street, was Chaliapin’s sanctuary from 1914 to 1922. These walls witnessed his final days in Russia before his departure abroad, a journey from which he never returned. The F. Chaliapin Memorial Apartment holds the echoes of his powerful voice, his dramatic presence, and his captivating artistry. It opened its doors as a museum in 1975, initially as the “Russian Opera Department.” Chaliapin’s name finally graced a commemorative plaque in the 1980s. Around the same time, Boris Kustodiev’s iconic “Portrait of F. I. Chaliapin” found its home within these walls. A decade later, the meticulous restoration of Chaliapin’s last St. Petersburg apartment brought the past back to life. Inside The F. Chaliapin Memorial Apartment, you’ll discover a treasure trove of Chaliapin’s life. The exhibition hall showcases his stage costumes, accessories, posters, and photographs. A poignant recreation of his dressing room corner from the Mariinsky Theatre takes center stage. The journey continues through his living quarters, his bedroom, and culminates in the dining room and entrance hall. Each room at The F. Chaliapin Memorial Apartment offers a glimpse into Chaliapin’s world. Informative leaflets guide you, describing the significance of each space and the displayed items. For those seeking a deeper connection, a small concert hall hosts musical performances and lectures, keeping the spirit of Chaliapin alive. A truly unique piece within The F. Chaliapin Memorial Apartment is the original portrait of the singer by Boris Kustodiev, completed in 1921. At Chaliapin’s request, his beloved French bulldog, Roika, is featured at his feet. Kustodiev, despite being confined to a wheelchair due to illness, masterfully captured Chaliapin’s larger-than-life persona on the expansive canvas. The portrait became a cherished possession, accompanying Chaliapin abroad. It eventually returned to The F. Chaliapin Memorial Apartment, a gift from his daughters, Marfa and Marina, in 1968.
