On a cold January evening in 1837, a fateful duel took place near the Chernaya Rechka. This is where we stand now, before the Место дуэли А.С. Пушкина Stele. The granite obelisk marks the very spot where Alexander Pushkin, Russia’s beloved poet, fought his last duel. The Место дуэли А.С. Пушкина Stele isn’t just a monument. It’s a portal to a tragic moment in Russian history. Pushkin, a literary giant, clashed with Georges d’Anthes. D’Anthes’s shot mortally wounded Pushkin, silencing a powerful voice. The original monument erected here was a simple brick pedestal with a plaster bust of Pushkin. Years later, it was replaced by the current granite and marble column, designed by E.I. Katonina. The nine-meter obelisk, with its bronze medallion, now stands as a solemn reminder. In 1962, two plates were added. They represent the barriers where Pushkin and d’Anthes stood, ten paces apart, before the fatal exchange. Close your eyes and imagine the tension, the biting winter air, the finality of the moment. The Место дуэли А.С. Пушкина Stele is more than just a cold stone marker. It’s a place where we remember a brilliant life cut short, a literary genius lost too soon.
