“Home of artists” they called this house overlooking the Malaya Neva Embankment. Today we are standing in front of the A.I. Kuindzhi Museum-Apartment. It’s a place steeped in history and art.

The A.I. Kuindzhi Museum-Apartment preserves the legacy of Arkhip Kuindzhi. He was a famous Russian landscape painter. Kuindzhi spent the last 13 years of his life right here. He chose this apartment in Birzhevoy Pereulok. The artist favored it because of its huge attic-studio. It offered a majestic view. From here he could see the Spit of the Vasilievsky Island and the Petrograd Side. This view and the natural light were perfect for his work.

Many famous painters lived in this building. They included Grigory and Nikanor Chernetsov, A. Beggrov, M. Klodt, A. Korzukhin, G. Myasoedov, I. Shishkin and I. Kramskoy. That’s why it was known as the “home of artists”.

Inside the A.I. Kuindzhi Museum-Apartment, you can explore the office, living room, and dining room. The artist’s workshop is also preserved. You’ll see his desk, easel, armchair and other personal items. It offers a glimpse into his daily life and creative process.

The studio also hosts an exhibition. It focuses on Kuindzhi’s teaching career at the Academy of Arts. He taught landscape painting from 1894 to 1897. Among his students were K. Bogayevsky, N. Roerich, and A. Rylov.

One story tells of Kuindzhi’s integrity. The Academy of Arts refused to fund a student’s trip abroad. The reason was the student’s ethnicity. He was Jewish. Kuindzhi paid for the trip himself. The student, Isaak Brodsky, later became a famous artist. Nicholas Roerich, another apprentice, called Kuindzhi “strong and honest”.

After Kuindzhi’s death, his wife moved out. The apartment was too big for her alone. The studio became a communal apartment. Later, it was transferred to the Leningrad Branch of the Union of Artists.

Nicholas Roerich suggested creating a museum in Kuindzhi’s workshop. This idea was realized for the 150th anniversary of Kuindzhi’s birth in 1991. It commemorates his contribution to Russian culture.

Today the A.I. Kuindzhi Museum-Apartment houses a small collection of his paintings. “Night” and “The North Study” are among them. You can also see works by his students. Many of them became great artists. The museum also displays Kuindzhi’s personal effects. These items help to recreate the atmosphere in which he lived and worked.

Visiting the A.I. Kuindzhi Museum-Apartment offers a unique opportunity. You can step back in time. You can immerse yourself in the world of a great Russian artist. You can appreciate his art, his teaching, and his commitment to justice.
