A weathered stone whispers stories. This is the Garthestein a memorial to Max Garthe Forstinspektor.

The Garthestein stands as a tribute to Max Garthe a man whose life intertwined with the forests of Rostock. He wasn’t just any forester. His legacy shaped the Rostock Heide. He championed sustainable forestry practices. He meticulously re-surveyed the entire Rostock Heide. He even advocated for new roads. The construction of the roads to Graal in 1904 and 1905 and to Markgrafenheide in 1907 and 1908 were partly thanks to his efforts.

Max’s dedication stemmed from family tradition. His father Julius was also a significant figure. He followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Georg Garthe. Georg a renowned forester established the first forest management plan for the Rostock Heide. Georg’s work laid the foundation for the sustainable practices Max later embraced. Georg even experimented with different tree species. He planted larches white firs spruce from Russia beeches hornbeams and elms. He wasn’t afraid to experiment and his work lives on.

Max himself was a highly educated man. He studied forestry and cameralia at the University of Rostock. He started his studies in 1888. He graduated from the Große Stadtschule Rostock in 1884. His academic background further enhanced his contribution to forestry management. Max’s dedication wasn’t confined to the forests. He served his country. He volunteered for the First World War. Sadly he died in 1915 a sacrifice that underscores his devotion to both his profession and his homeland.

The Garthestein more than just a stone. It is a silent testament. It speaks of generations of foresters. Their contributions to sustainable forestry practices. Their dedication to the Rostock Heide. It’s a reminder that our actions echo through time. That even a single person can leave an indelible mark. It’s a tribute not just to Max but to the entire Garthe family. Their legacy continues to inspire and shape the forests of this region. They left behind a treasure trove of knowledge. This knowledge is valuable even now. We can see their achievements in the forests around us.
