Standing here in front of the Hausbaumhaus, you might be wondering what makes this house so special. Imagine a tree, not growing from the ground, but from the very heart of a building. The Hausbaumhaus is one of the oldest merchants’ houses in Rostock, dating back to the time of the Hanseatic League. This late Gothic building was erected in 1490 and has a unique architectural feature: a house tree. This towering oak trunk rests on a huge erratic block in the basement and stands in the center of the house. The high building form with the narrow street-facing facade was typical for this era. Just as characteristic for the building is the closed brick facade and the staggered gable. The Hausbaumhaus is the only preserved house in Rostock with a house tree. This enormous oak serves as a supporting beam for the wooden ceiling on the ground floor and a storage floor. Since April 15, 2014, visitors are welcome to experience the unique architecture of this historic building around the house tree. The tour is free of charge. This is a unique glimpse into the past, it is worth a visit.
