“Did the Vikings sail here?” a child’s voice piped up, echoing across Store Kattinge Sø. Well, not quite Vikings, but their descendants certainly did. Store Kattinge Sø, nestled near Roskilde Fjord, has a history intertwined with human activity dating back centuries. This lake wasn’t always a lake. It was originally part of Roskilde Fjord. In the 14th century, a dam was built, creating both Store Kattinge Sø and its smaller sibling, Lille Kattinge Sø. This construction wasn’t just for scenic beauty. It was strategically linked to the building of Nebbe Slot, a castle whose remnants lie quietly nearby. Imagine the activity here then, the bustle of construction, the changing landscape. The dam itself became a hub of industry over the years. A sluice was added in the 1750s, powering a watermill which eventually evolved into Kattinge Værk. This water power drove everything from a fulling mill to a grain mill and even a cellulose factory. Store Kattinge Sø stretches across 71 hectares, a shallow expanse with an average depth of just one meter. The water, while not crystal clear due to algae growth, reflects the surrounding reed beds. These reeds have a purpose beyond their natural beauty. They are harvested for thatching roofs, a traditional craft connecting the present to the past. The lake, owned and managed by the Danish Nature Agency, teems with life. It’s part of a larger ecosystem, Roskilde Fjord Wildlife Reserve, and a designated EU bird protection area within the Natura 2000 network. This makes Store Kattinge Sø a vital haven for diverse species. During winter, witness the spectacle of up to 30,000 tufted ducks resting on the water after a night of foraging in the fjord. These migrating birds, traveling from as far as Northern Scandinavia and Russia, find refuge in this relatively ice-free area. Large flocks of starlings also find sanctuary in the reed beds, their evening murmurings adding to the lake’s symphony. Store Kattinge Sø is a place where history, nature, and human endeavor intertwine, offering a unique glimpse into the past and a vibrant display of the present.
