Contemplate for a moment. What if these walls could talk? The Margaret Mitchell House stands before us. It is a testament to literary history and enduring spirit.

This house museum located in Atlanta was home to author Margaret Mitchell in the early 20th century. It is now the heart of the Atlanta History Center’s Midtown Campus. Inside, you’ll find permanent exhibitions that delve into the building’s fascinating history.

Originally a single-family residence built in 1899, the house was transformed into the Crescent Apartments in 1919. Margaret Mitchell and her husband John Marsh called Apt. 1 home after their marriage in 1925. Imagine Mitchell here. She spent her days writing what would become her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Gone with the Wind.

Mitchell nicknamed their apartment “the Dump”. Despite the less-than-glamorous conditions, it was here that her epic tale began to take shape. She meticulously crafted her story chapter by chapter. Mitchell stashed them away in envelopes around the house.

The building changed hands several times. It faced periods of decline and revival. A fire in the late 1980s caused minor damage. Fortunately, Mayor Andrew Young helped designate the Margaret Mitchell House as a city landmark in 1989 securing its future.

Restoration efforts began with careful attention to architectural history. The front of the house was restored to its 1899 appearance. The back was returned to its look when Margaret Mitchell lived here.

Tragedy struck again in September 1994. An arson fire destroyed much of the building. Generous support from Daimler-Benz Corporation made restoration possible. Another arson attempt occurred in May 1996. The restoration was almost complete. All but Margaret Mitchell’s apartment was damaged or destroyed.

Resilience prevailed. Insurance money allowed the restoration to continue. The Margaret Mitchell House was dedicated on May 16, 1997. It stands as a monument to Mitchell’s literary achievement. The house also serves as a symbol of Atlanta’s determination to preserve its past. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

As you explore the Margaret Mitchell House, consider the power of place. Think about how a simple apartment can become the birthplace of a timeless story.
